How To change a site name in your VM in the Cloud service

Sometimes you need to change your web site name. This is useful for testing a site before you go live. With the eApps provided, customized Webmin control panel in the Virtual Machine in the Cloud service it is easy to do.

Navigate as follows:

> Control Panel

> System tab

> Web Site Management

> click your web site

> Edit Directives

> now change your site name

> Click Save

Your site will now resolve under the new name. Please note that the actual site directory and files will not change.

eApps 25th Anniversary!

eApps Hosting is pleased to announce our 25th year in business!

Our company was founded on May 5, 1986 as Strategic System Consulting, Inc. Of course, we did not offer hosting at that time. Al Gore didn’t invent the Internet until the 1990s (hehe), so back in those days we were a management consulting firm, specializing in information technology.

In January of 1996 we attended a conference held by Lotus Development Corporation where we saw a demonstration of Lotus Notes (branded as Lotus Domino) applications being served over the Internet. We were hooked! We decided to parlay our experience building Lotus Notes applications into a new department offering Lotus Notes hosting. We were one of the first three companies in the world to do so.

From there we leveraged our Java development skills into offering virtual hosting using open source VServer and later moved to Parallel’s Virtuozzo containers. Before we knew it, our hosting operation eclipsed our consulting and development business. So in 2002 we decided to focus exclusively on hosting, under our eApps brand name.

From there, the evolution has continued. Our new Virtual Machine in the Cloud service was launched earlier this year. Our vision of the Cloud is to offer a service compatible with our existing VPS service, on a fault tolerant Cloud platform. In addition to our Application Repository, supported 24/7 by in-house technical experts, the VM in the Cloud offering allows customers to choose their resources à la carte. Check out our Create-A-Cloud™ tool! And don’t miss our 25% OFF Madness promotions in this newsletter!

Meet eApps – Ricardo Underwood

Ricardo was born in Liberia, Costa Rica, the capital of the province of Guanacaste and the most popular tourist destination in the country due to a combination of beautiful beaches and mountains. He has lived in his home town his entire life except for when he went away for schooling at Instituto Tecnologico de Costa Rica, the most highly respected technology university in the country.

Ricardo started his career in technology as a technical support representative for the university while he was a student. After college, he worked for an on-line start-up company, and was responsible for deploying and maintaining all of the company’s servers, network equipment and applications. Ricardo has extensive call center experience and was a system administrator at the country’s largest 5 star resort and marina, where he used advanced virtualization technologies to meet computing needs at less cost.

Family is very important to Ricardo. Most of his relatives live close by in Costa Rica. He also has family in the UK and USA. When not at work he spends time with his wife, son and other famliy and friends. He likes to go to the movies, and is an avid reader of information about technology. Ricardo says it is a cruel profession unless you have up to date skills, and he enjoys learning about new things.

Working at eApps has been a great experience for Ricardo. He gets satisfaction using his skills and creativity to deliver solutions to customers, and says the eApps team is like a second family to him. When you get a chance, please say hello to Ricardo.

Article – Internet Data Caps Cometh

In a May 11 article for the Wall Street Journal titled Internet Data Caps Cometh, Holman W. Jenkins, Jr. reports that data caps by providers are becoming increasingly common due to the rapid increase in bandwidth usage on the Internet.

The writer explains how various forms of data caps and usage billing are being implemented, and reflects on what it means to users and the Internet in general. The author takes a positive view of the discipline that will result from caps. For example, Jenkins states that Netflix in Canada has implemented a feature which allows streaming video customers to control their bit-rate without compromising the quality of the video feed as a response to new overage penalty policies by providers.

Holman provides some food for thought on one of the most important topics related to the Internet today. He also asks an interesting question. Does the Microsoft-Skype mega deal assume that the bandwidth required by ubiquitous live video, chat and VOIP is basically an un-metered resource? The author raises some important questions. For more information, check out the article.
